Half of America Showed Their True Colors On Election Night
I’m scared for America. Not for the country it’s become after four years of Trump’s reign but for the country it’s becoming. I’ve never doubted the goodness of human nature until I witnessed the results of election night
After four years of terror, bigotry, racism, and 9 months of mishandling the deadliest pandemic of the 21st century, I thought America would try to right itself by voting blue but the sea of red doesn’t lie.
Half of The United States doesn’t give a shit about basic human decency.
I don’t know much about US politics and being a Canadian, I probably know less about US politics than the average American. But the one thing I do know is how to be a good human being or at least I try to be.
Shouldn’t that be the goal of every person — to be good and do good in this world? Maybe I’m naive but regardless of how selfish and self-involved someone is, I believe that they can offer some good in this world. I’ve never doubted the goodness of human nature until I saw the election results.
This year you’re voting for the person not the party
It pains me to look at the live results of the US election. Regardless of the number of electoral votes he has, Biden is up against a Trump supporting country. This isn’t to say that (all) of Trump’s voters are bigots, racists, and liars with a complete disregard for human life but supporting one to lead the country is just as bad, even worse than being one themselves at this point.
Because they’ve seen the damage that Trump can do. They just don’t care.
America has a reputation for being politically polarized. You’re either a Replican or a Democrat. Red or Blue. While this has always been the case in American politics, I always believed both sides had one goal in common which was to make America better. Regardless of who held office (even Bush), they never commended white supremicist groups, lied on social media, or intentionally put the American people in harm’s way. They’ve never (publicly) called other countries a “shit hole” or decried American democracy.
Based on the last four years under Trump’s administration, it shouldn’t matter if you’re right or left. You may not agree with Biden’s views. You don’t have to like Biden as a person. None of that should matter this year and for the next four years. What matters in this year’s election is getting Trump out of office. What matters this year is to vote for someone who is not going to burn America down with a tweet. What matters this year to vote for a leader who isn’t going to intentionally endanger the lives of millions of people because he has no clue what science is or even worse, understands it but chooses to blatantly ignore it and encourage people to do the same.
Biden may not be the president you want but right now he’s the president America needs.
Trump didn’t need empty promises this year
In 2016, Trump’s slogan was “Make America Great Again”. He promised more domestic jobs, a wall to keep out the Mexicans, and a bunch of other unkept promises. This year, aside from a few hats with that infamous slogan, I didn’t hear a peep of those words that won Trump the election four years ago.
I guess he didn’t need to make empty promises this year.
In the last four years, he created enough destruction and momentum without the need for the cheesy slogan. In 2016, I hated Trump but I can understand why Americans voted for him. He’s the billionaire everyone wanted to be. The promise to bring jobs home were enticing. He gave hope to the blue collared workers and to the corporate figureheads controlling the economy. It wasn’t a fluke that Trump won in 2016 and it definitely wont’ be a fluke this year if he won. This year, voters know exactly what they’re getting if he was to be re-elected — more Twitter rants, accusations of a fraudulent democratic system, more COVID cases and deaths, the dismemberment of the Affordable Care Act, the abolishment of women’s rights, and even more Twitter rants.
On November 3, The United States should have been painted blue. Not because voters are rejecting Republican views but because they should be rejecting Trump and his ideals. But rather than telling him that he failed as the country’s leader, half of America thought he did a great job and should keep leading them down this path of destruction for another four years.
Trump didn’t need to make empty promises this year. He already showed them how great America can be if there were no consequences to your actions.
The heart of America is gone even if Biden wins
The past 4 years, I’ve watched America bleed through Trump’s leadership. He’s given permission to racists, bigots, homophobes to…well… be themselves. He’s given them a platform and a voice.
Biden needed a landslide win to show the country and the rest of the world that America can be great again. To say Trump’s way was the wrong way to lead a country. That Trump’s way is not the way to greatness. That selfishness, arrogance, and a complete disregard for the health and safety of his countrymen and women are completely unacceptable.
Instead, the race is as close as ever.
Instead, half of Americans thought, “Yes, please! I want four more years of whatever Trump is serving!”
As I write this, Biden is winning by a hair based on the electoral votes with Trump demanding the counts of ballots be stopped . Even if Biden wins, it’s hard to ignore the sea of red on the US map, with at least half the country voting Trump in for a second term. With that kind of visual, it’s difficult to see the greatness that America once was.
